Lunar New Year

Everyone Say hay boke-mahn he pah du say oh
Today in South Korea, it is their Lunar New Year ;)
Korean New Year, commonly known as Seolnal

New Year's day is the greatest celebration of the year in Korea.
Just like,Chinese we celebrate Chinese New Year
Korean New Year (Seol-Nal) is also celebrated at sunset on the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice. It is a Lunar New Year (harvest moon festival). Seol Nal is a 3 days celebration and almost all Koreans move to their hometowns to celebrate the occasion.

The Koreans are family oriented people.
They believe in celebrating the New Year with their family. The usually wear new cloths which is known as "Solbim" while their traditional dress called "Hanbok" and wishes each other

The New Years day begins with visiting and wishing their parents with "Saehae bok manhi badeseyo" – which means receive a lot of new year's luck. They pay their respects to elders by bowing for them.

In return, parents gift young ones with new year's money. (Just like Chinese, we get Ang Paos from the elderly)
Koreans generally distribute money to their children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and other small children  Some people prefer to distribute new crisp notes too
The Bank of Korea issues crisp notes on the occasion of Korean New Year.

Women get busy preparing the food since New Year Eve.
They make “ttok-kuk"- which is Korean Spicy Rice Cake Bowls
Ttok-kuk means " adding age".
Koreans believe if they have a bowl of this soup, they will become one year older
Koreans traditionally add one to their age after Seol Nal(Lunar New Year) not after their birthdays =)

For more info about what Koreans play after the bowing session, check out this link

I will end this post with few idols group wearing Hanbok and how their Lunar New Year Style =)
